What is stress?
Stress is the adverse reaction that people have to
excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them
There is a clear distinction between pressure, which can create a
“buzz” and be a motivating factor, and stress, which can occur when
this pressure becomes excessive
Stress has the potential to affect any person in a company – from
the CEO to the newest most junior member of the team
Currently:
-
Stress affects one in five of the working
population
-
It is now the single biggest cause of sickness
absence in the UK
-
It costs UK industry £3.7 billion each year
-
1 in 5 people say that they find their work either very
or extremely stressful
-
Over half a million people report experiencing
work-related stress at a level that they believe has actually made them
ill
Under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, organisations have a
duty to look after the health, safety and well being of their employees.
To Reduce Sickness Absence
-
Work-related stress accounts for over a third of all new
incidences of ill health.
-
Each case of stress-related ill health leads to an average of
30.2 working days lost.
-
A total of 13.8 million working days were lost to stress,
depression and anxiety in 2006/07.
-
In financial terms the estimated cost of sickness absence to the
UK as a whole is around £12 billion a year. Stress is the single largest cause
of occupational ill health, accounting for around half of all days lost to
work-related ill health in these sectors.
